When I Survey The Wondrous Cross – SATB

A solo violin begins this setting with the familiar Hamburg hymn tune. But the choir’s entrance reveals that the hymn’s well-known lyrics are being sung to the O Waly Waly tune (O Danny Boy). These two beloved melodies will take turns as the intensity increases.  Following the dramatic climax the music gradually quiets to a reflective conclusion.
